Prepared for Diverse Careers

.

Demand for graduates in agriculture is stronger than ever, especially for those that have the scientific knowledge and experiences in developing sustainable solutions for our agricultural and food system challenges. Climate change, environmental protection, and food security at the local and global scale are complex challenges that require multidisciplinary knowledge and critical thinking skill sets.

Understanding agroecology and sustainable food systems will prepare you for diverse careers beyond just studying agriculture or environmental science alone.

Here are just a few of the fields you could pursue:

  • Agricultural research
  • Agriculture and food policy
  • Community garden management
  • Conservation or wildlife management
  • Cooperative Extension or education
  • Crop consulting
  • Farm management
  • International agriculture organization work
  • Non-profits (i.e. food security)
  • Private-sector (i.e. local food purchasing, food hubs)

Ariel Fugate, interviewing Gary Wise.

Ariel Fugate– Hired as the Locally Grown Accounts Representative for Lowes Foods post graduation

.

“In the Agroecology program, I gained skills and knowledge in each facet of food from soil health, to business connections, to understanding the constraints of food budgets many families face. After graduating, I worked for Lowes Foods and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems to bring products from North Carolina’s small and mid-sized producers into the mainstream supply chain. I currently work as a Communications and Engagement Specialist focusing on land use around a Marine Corps base. Through my education, I am now able to mobilize action plans for communities on food system and broader environmental issues.”

Caroline Hansley– Organizing Representative, Dirty Fuels Campaign

.

“I studied Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems because we need to transform food systems that can reduce rather than add to challenges locally and globally. Young people are the ones leading the change. I am positive this multidisciplinary major and the unique resources and faculty in sustainable agriculture at NC State will get more people interested and trained as leaders in the intersections of agriculture, food, and natural resource management!”
